The dates for this year's Junior golf school are now set.  You may register your child as far in advance as you wish, but to hold a place you must submit a check, cash or charge it to your lot in the golf shop at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the golf school.  The cost of the school will be $175 and the program is limited to the first 30 children.  Please make all checks payable to Big Canoe POA.

Our Junior Program has really grown here at Big Canoe.  We started a week long golf school 10 years ago and had four children participating in the school.  Now we run four golf schools throughout the summer and we fill them to capacity within a short period of time.  Currently we have 30 children participate in each of the four-day schools.

The day begins on the putting green -
The school is held daily from 8 a.m. to noon.   The children start out on the putting green at 8 a.m. and practice their short putts. If they make three putts in a row from three feet, they are rewarded with a treat and move one foot. The children then move to the longer-distance putts. While they are on the putting green the children learn all the etiquette dealing with putting on and around the greens. They learn how to mark their golf ball, where to walk and not to walk in their fellow players line of putt, how to fix a ball mark, how to tend the flag while another player is putting from a long distance and more.

Around 8:45 a.m. they walk down to the driving range where they learn the full swing.  Big Canoe has 30 state-of-the-art range mats and each child is assigned a mat.  Around 9:30 a.m. the children take a short break and get some lemonade or ice water.  Around 9:45 a.m. the children learn the pitch shot and sand shot on Tuesday and Thursday, the chip and run shot on Wednesday and Friday.

Throughout their time learning, the children are rewarded with a small candy treat when they succeed learning the game.  Around 10:20 a.m. each day the children are broken up into groups of four or five, usually of the same or similar ability, a volunteer coach is assigned to them and they go out on the golf course and play a couple of holes until lunch time.  The children must walk and carry his/her own golf bag while they are playing on the course.

The children come off the golf course at noon and go to the outside patio where they eat lunch together.  The parents or grandparents must pick up the children by 12:15 p.m. each day.

Tournament is highlight of final day -
On the final day, we hold a 9-hole Adult-Child tournament beginning at 10:30 a.m.  If the child does not have a parent or grandparent who can play with them, the professional staff can usually find an adult volunteer to play 9 holes of golf with them.  The two-player team plays a modified scramble / alternate shot (when they are on the green).  As long as we are given enough notice, we always find a volunteer to play with every child.  After the tournament, a trophy is awarded to the first and second place male and female winner.

While the children are attending the golf school, they are permitted to use the driving range at anytime during the four days and they are permitted to play for free during non-busy times.  The parents or grandparents can play with them or they can watch them play.  The only thing we ask is that the adult does not allow the child to play slowly and hold up other golfers who come up from behind.

Proper attire, clubs are required -
Your child must wear proper golf attire.  No denim, no T-shirts and all shirts must have a collar.  Girls can wear a blouse without a collar but they may not wear T-shirts.

Each child must have his/her own set of clubs and golf bag.  The children will be walking and carrying their golf bag so make sure the golf bag does not have too many clubs and balls.  If your child does not have a set of clubs, we can provide a set at no charge.

You must call the golf shop and make an appointment to have your child measured so we will have time to cut down some clubs for him/her to use.   We also stock junior golf clubs for children of all ages and sizes for purchase and a full stock of golf gloves in children's sizes as well.

The golf school will provide all the golf balls when your child is playing on the golf course.  The golf school will provide all the range balls when your child is practicing.

Your child should have a golf glove for his left hand if he is a right-handed player.  If he is a new golfer, it is recommended the child have a golf glove on both hands.

Your child can wear golf shoes with soft spikes or sneakers will do.  If your child is a real beginner, we highly recommend sneakers. Your child will not damage the greens walking in sneakers but he will do damage to the greens if he/she does not know how to walk with soft spikes.

Your child should have a baseball cap; this will help keep him/her cooler when it is hot and sunny.

Have your child put on sun screen and or bug spray before they get to the golf school.  If they do not put it on before the school, place some in their golf bag and we will assist them if needed.  If your child has an allergy to sunscreen or bug spray, please let us know.

Have your child's name on every club as they tend to put them on the ground and others may pick them up.

Power Ade or lemonade and water will be accessible at all times during the golf school.

Lunch will be provided at 11:50 a.m. and they will be eating on the outside patio located behind the golf shop.  Children should be picked up no later than 12:15 p.m., please be prompt.  Sign up sheets are posted in the golf shop.

Recent Study

A recent study found the average American golfer walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found American golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of beer a year. That means, on average, American golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon. Kind of makes you proud.
