New Marina to open in May Print E-mail
Written by Dave Holty, Lakes and Marina Committee Chairman
Wednesday, 16 April 2008
During the first week of April, I'm sure you noticed the big changes that are visible in the Marina.  Sea wall construction is finished now, and the new docks have been assembled and are ready to be installed.  The docks will be floated down the lake in sections, and attached to the sea wall with flexible walkways which allow the docks to float free depending upon lake water levels.

As soon as we have the exact configuration of the new docks, we'll prepare a complete map, with all the slips numbered.  These maps will be mailed to all current boat owners, in preparation for the slip allocation lottery which is scheduled for the Chapel at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26. All boat owners will get a letter from Marina Manager Sally Williams inviting them to come to the lottery prepared to choose a slip when their turn comes. The letter will also include instructions for those folks who cannot come to the meeting; they will be able to name a "proxy" who can choose their slip for them at the meeting.

Following the lottery, we expect to have a number of vacant slips and several people on the waiting list will have an opportunity to select a slip. Also we expect to add another rental boat to our fleet; records from last year show that this program is growing and there is enough demand to support another pontoon boat. Finally, there will be room for handicap-access slips which the building code requires us to provide.

Task Force leader Bill Bates told the committee that he expects to have the new marina ready to open around the first of May. After the new docks are installed, landscaping and the paving of the paths and parking lot will commence. New canoe racks will be installed and the electrical connections will be completed. Watch for further announcements about the Grand Opening of the new marina later in May.

In other news from the committee, Amenities Membership Director Palmer Howard is working with us to plan some new social activities to enhance the utilization of the marina this summer.  Ideas being discussed include fishing classes and tournaments, regattas, moonlight cruises, and floating picnics. These activities would be open to all Big Canoe residents; anyone interested in getting involved should contact Palmer (706) 268-3002 at her office in the Fitness Center.

Boat Rentals

At Lake Petit Marina, you can rent a Pontoon Boat for a family outing and troll for trout while enjoying a picnic cruise. Jon Boats, Canoes and Kayaks are also available for smaller parties. Bank fishing is very popular among the Timeshare people. On Lake Sconti, you can use a float tube, kayak, and canoe to test your skills for catching Bass, Bream and Crappie.
