Big Canoe Public Safety Director Bill Bates had good news
for the Marina Renovation Task Force last month; the Marina renovation got under way on Feb.
4, is running on schedule, and on budget!
Kudos to Marina Manager Sally Williams, who requested and cajoled boat
owners to relocate their boats so that the construction could begin on time.
Dismantling and removing the old docks was a real eye
opener... they were in far worse shape than even the committee imagined. A worker
stuck his foot through a rotten board. The docks fell apart as they were
dragged out of the water; even the steel beams gave way. We had hoped that
there might be some salvageable material, but most of it was worthless. We are
indeed lucky that we didn't have any accidents in the past few months.
The old wooden sea walls have been removed, and dredging is
well under way now. This picture shows the empty marina cove and the huge
diesel shovel digging up the muck along the shoreline. Dredging will give us
deeper water in the slips close to shore, so we won't have boats resting upon
dry land if we have another drought this year.
Dredging will also enlarge the cove slightly, enabling us to
get a few more slips in the new configuration. When dredging is complete the
new sea wall will be constructed, along with a walkway around the shore. Then, in another two or three weeks, the new
docks will be delivered in sections up at the North Marina,
and floated down the lake for the final installation.
The committee has begun making plans for the April lottery,
which will be used to allocate the new slips-- first to current boat owners and
then to as many folks as we can accommodate from the waiting list. A separate lottery is planned for the smaller
slips, which can accommodate jon boats and the popular "electric" boats.
Watch for further announcements about the time and the place
for the lottery meeting. Boat owners will have plenty of time to study the new
configuration and chose their favorite slips prior to the actual drawing.
